Katie’s Story

Katie Chason

In early 2022, my parents adopted a sweet beautiful, white curly haired little schnoodle, named Katie. A schnoodle, if you do not know, is a Schnauzer and a Poodle mix.  She was adopted from Henry County Animal Control in Georgia. My parents found her through a veterinarian named Maria. They used to go to her for all their other dogs.

Katie loved my parents very much and there was no shortage of love from my parents either. She never wanted for anything, she was a great little dog, but unfortunately her life was cut short. She was only 4 years old when my parents adopted her and she only lived about 10 months after that. The poor girl had a heart attack on December 6, 2022.

I will never forget that day.  Mom was picking me up from work that day with Katie.  Mom asked me if Katie looked a little swollen on the stomach. I should have immediately taken her in to see one of the veterinarians I worked with at the time. I should have trusted my gut, as 6:00PM rolled around, I found out that my mom was rushing Katie to the emergency vet in the area. The emergency vet told mom that Katie did not have much time left. Nobody can ever prepare you for those words, and no matter how many times you have had your dogs or cats leave you, it never gets any easier.

We felt horrible for a long time. We thought that there was something we all missed on her examinations. I remember telling my mom that I felt guilty for not taking her in to see one of the vets at work. My mom told me not to feel guilty, but that did not work. I remember my mom telling me that the emergency vet informed her that there was nothing she, or anyone else could have done, Katie had a heart condition that was hard to see on a regular exam.

Regardless of how Katie left this world, she gave all her love to my mom and dad.  She will always live on in our hearts and memories. She was a great gift to my parents and she will never be forgotten.
